Last weekend I went to stay with my friends who live near the Mediterranean town of Céret to enjoy a weekend of sun, music and a carnival atmosphere at the annual Cherry Festival. The region around Céret is a major fruit producer, famed in particular for its cherries. The first of the seasons’ pick are, by local tradition, sent to France's President so let’s hope President Sarkozy enjoyed them!

This annual cherry festival in Céret is a colourful weekend of stone spitting, music, dancing and entertainment in the streets, not to mention the inventive recipes involving cherries served up in the local restaurants like cherry burgers, cherries on toast, and all washed down with cherry wine or cherry beer. On Saturday there is the official opening of the festival followed by the Parade of the “Bandas” consisting of over 200 musicians from bands from throughout the region. In the afternoon is Catalan Dancing, the cherry stoning competition followed by the famous cherry stone spitting contest.

On my drive to this area I visited one of our Languedoc villas – Prieure de Lagrasse which is in the heart of the Corbiere Valley and Rivesaltes region. Bonnes Pacques or Happy Easter to you!

France celebrates Easter with great fanfare and vigour. The entire country revels in the Eastertide festivities and shops are beautifully decorated with white and dark chocolate rabbits, chickens, bells and fish. For those families who have taken an early holiday in a French family rental farmhouse children can wake up on the Easter Sunday morning hoping to find beautifully decorated Easter eggs for them.

Whilst England has the traditional Easter bunnies, these are not found in France. Easter celebrations in France incorporate the Easter symbols of bells and fish. The French Easter fish are called 'Poisson d'Avril', which means 'April Fish'. The Poisson d'Avril makes his appearance on the 1st of April, as French children delight in playing a kind of 'April Fool's' trick. They stick a paper fish onto the back of as many adults as possible.

Cloche volant or Flying Bells are another important part of the Easter traditions of France. French Catholics believe that on Good Friday, all the church bells in France fly to the Vatican in Rome, carrying with them the misery and grief of those who mourn Jesus' crucifixion on that day. These flying bells return on Easter Sunday morning and bring with them lots of chocolate and eggs. In keeping with the tradition, French church bells do not ring from Good Friday to Easter morning.

On Easter Sunday lamb is traditionally cooked in France. 'Gigot D'agneau' (leg of lamb) is prepared in many Christian household in France, especially for the ceremonious occasion. The sun shone in Arcachon

Last week my colleague Sally (from our UK office) and I visited Arcachon and the day was glorious! The sun shone and I was slowly kicking myself as to why I had never been before in all the years I have lived and worked in south west France.

This posh resort town is a hotspot for family holidaymakers and content retirees. With more than a dozen beaches, is what makes Arcachon a superb place to take your beach villa holiday in France. Visit the Dune du Pyla, Europe's highest sand dune and a slice of the Sahara in France. It's an absolute must-see. The Bassin d'Arcachon (bay of Arcachon) is also known for the Banc d'Arguin, a 1000-acre sand bar in the form of a crescent across the waters from the Dune. Pack a picnic lunch and prepare to play in white sand and swim in the azure water. This is paradise!

Many Happy Returns!!

In the past few weeks I have had a few of my favourite villas come back to Quality Villas and all I can say is Many Happy Returns!

These popular villas have given many of our clients holidays to remember for their each individual appeal, whether it has been a classy beachfront villa in Sete or a Perigourdine estate in the Dordogne or a spacious Maison d’ Maitre in the rural countryside of the Tarn et Garonne.

In Sete, that jewel in the Languedoc, is Villa Mont St Clair which faces the sea and very well appointed. The house stands out amongst the others around it with a particularly unusual green tiled tower which houses part of the principal bathroom. A seafood experience in more ways than one!!

I am, once again, dreaming of Morocco and mentally organising my next trip to this wonderful country. All areas of Morocco excite me from the bustling cities to the dramatic coastline and coastal towns. I adore the buzz of Essaouira and the calmness of Aglou where we have an array of stunning beachside villas perfect for that Agadir beach villa holiday. Another wonderful town is Oualidia with its fabulous lagoon and long sandy beach. The town is small but big in impact and a surfer’s paradise. Fresh caught oysters and spider crab are a speciality here and a perfect accompaniment with a delicious Moroccan salad. On my last visit to Oualidia I found two excellent restaurants whereby I enjoyed the freshest squid I have ever tasted. Calamari is my favourite seafood dish and I don’t care what form it takes in the cooking! Deep fried or dusted in flour and pan fried. In the evening I went to my second restaurant and ordered the set menu which came with oysters (I love them!) so much seafood and a feast of fish, ranging from sole, dorade and red mullet. I could hardly walk home after all this fabulous food to my Morocco villa near the beach.

Feria Fever in Beziers and two new villas.......

Having just come back from the Languedoc whereby I procured two new super family villas in the Languedoc I visited Beziers and looked at the cathedral that overlooks the River Orb and though I would read up about this lovely town. Little did I know that Beziers is famous for its annual Feria, which for those who are not familiar with, is the annual festival of bullfighting.

This annual event takes place in mid August when partying takes place from dawn ‘til the following dawn in some cases! The lovely brick arena becomes the focus of the festival where bullfights take place several times a day.
Love it or loathe it, bullfighting is enduringly popular in the south of France, particularly in the Languedoc, and is very much part of the culture here. It has been a tradition for centuries, due to the close proximity to Spain.
Much pomp and ceremony takes place during a bullfight, it is basically a test of courage, strength and skill between a bull and a matador, or torero. The torero must read the bull and anticipate his actions. His job is, admittedly to stay alive, but most importantly to entertain the crowd. Depending on his prowess (and the applause in the arena), the dignitary of the day may award an ear, or two ears, as a mark of his performance. For some though, it’s the natty little costumes they wear and those very, very tight trousers …....

If you can’t bear the spectacle of the bull fights, or corridas as they are called here, you don’t have to. You can still glean all of the excitement, admire the culture and soak up the atmosphere on the roads of Beziers after the arena empties. There is so much to do and see you will find that you want to be in two places at once. There is the enchanting horse show, the Spanish flamenco dancers, concerts, processions of floats and bands and much, much more. The Feria offers many different types of entertainment which suit all ages. There is always something going on, and most of it is free.

My first new villa is in Argeliers, a bustling little village south of Beziers in the heart of the Minervois wine growing region of the Languedoc. This family villa rental is a delight with such a pretty garden and pool – perfect for those lazy days by the pool, or if you fancy a day at the beach, its only 25 minutes away. The house is bright and light and very comfortable with the added bonus of full air conditioning.

My second villa is in the charming village of Autignac which is north of Beziers and just 15 minutes to the beach, perfect for your villa holiday in the Languedoc. Long sandy beaches, warm Mediterranean waters in the fabulous Languedoc region

Reading the news today is nothing but doom and gloom so I decided to turn my thoughts to summer holidays. I am travelling to the Languedoc shortly to visit new villas for our Languedoc portfolio of luxury houses and farmhouses near the coast.

Picture the Languedoc and you imagine Carcassonne with its medieval city with jousting and troubadours; the fabulous Corbiere Valley with endless vineyards; the Ariege with its breathtaking backdrop of the Pyrenees to pretty coastal towns of Port Vendres and Collieure famed for their fabulous seafood. For those wine buffs amongst us there are no less than 4 main domains in this area offering heady reds to sample and to buy. New Year and looking forward to the sun!!!

New Year is one of the oldest and most observed celebrations in countries all over the world and France is no exception! New Year's Eve is a great opportunity for families and friends to dine together once again at Le Réveillon or Fête de Saint-Sylvestre. At midnight streets fill with everyone moving outside to continue the celebration. In the Midi Pyrenees, where I live, the local tradition is to attend evening mass and then follow a procession to the vineyards and pick grapes at midnight.

Just after New Year, on Twelfth Night, we celebrate with King's cake (la galette des rois) which consists of a puff pastry case filled with frangipane. Frangipane is made with eggs, sugar, butter and ground almonds. The cakes are sold with a paper crown on top. A dried bean, small coin or ceramic figure is hidden in the filling. The person who finds the bean, coin or figure in their portion is 'king' for the day and wears the paper crown.

New Year is also the time when we start to think about our summer holidays and after weeks of snow and freezing temperatures it’s time to think of sun and your family farmhouse in South West France or your modern family villa in the Languedoc.

Chateaux, chateaux everywhere....

Did you know that there are thousands of Chateaux in the Dordogne, from ones surrounded by moats to those that look like fairytale legends. For those who have never visited the Dordogne then read on and learn about this fantastic region which is visited by thousands every year and you can see why. This region is known as the Perigord and made up of 4 different Perigord covering the north, south, east and west and all offering history, gastronomic delights, chateaux, manoirs, caves and the fabulous Dordogne River and all accessible from your French luxury holiday property, whether a manor house or stone cottage.

The first place I visited when I moved to France was Rocamadour, France’s second most visited tourist attraction after Le Mont St-Michel. This magical town with golden houses clinging to the side of a cliff over the Alzou canyon is reached by a lift which takes you to the top of the town. From there you pass shops and restaurants until you reach the little church at the top. Not far from Rocamadour is the Gouffres du Padirac which is the most famous caves whereby you travel through on a boat – great for adults but even better for children looking at the stalagmites and stalactites. In our portfolio of Dordogne quality rental properties is a delightful chateau called Chateau de la Riviere which simply translated means The Chateau on the River, the river in question being the famous Dordogne river.

Many visitors to this region visit Sarlat, the medieval town of the Dordogne with its famous Saturday market offering excellent local produce and cheeses. In the evening the town has a romantic feel about it with the portrait artists outside the Cathedral St Sacerodos and the numerous restaurants offering the regions famous cuisine – duck!! Without a doubt the Perigord are superb at their duck, from confit du canard to magret (duck breast) to smoked duck salad with local grown walnuts.

Visitors to this region should not think that the Dordogne is mainly for sightseeing and adults but a fab place for children and teenagers. Kayaking on the Dordogne River or cycling on one of the many routes that snake along the river, the list is endless.
I love this region as it is so diverse and whereas it’s busy in the summer months spring and autumn are delightful. When thinking of booking your French family holiday villa then think of what the Dordogne has to offer – you will not be disappointed!!

Following the black diamonds.....

In South West France there are many markets which vary from Night markets in the summer to Farmers Markets or just plain Bric & Brac markets so it’s a perfect area for your South West villa holiday whether in summer or off season.

The most famous truffle market starting on the first Tuesday of December until mid-March is in Lalbenque which is close to Cahors in South West France. This market is busiest in the month of January, when the black truffles have their highest perfume and in December last year black truffles were sold for about €1,000 per kilo in some farmer's markets. It takes place in the main street, called "La rue du Marché aux Truffes” and is well worth a visit. The market opens on the dot of two o’clock and generally lasts just a few minutes with everyone hiding their “black diamond” treasure under red checked napkins, in paper bags or small wicker baskets.

If you are to make a day of it then arrive before midday and have a truffle omelette in one of the restaurants that line the main street. We have rural French farmhouses to rent throughout the year and within easy reach of this village and many others.

Truffles are strange looking fungi found just below the ground in open woodland, usually under oak or hazel trees, and their pungent aroma attracts many animals, particularly female pigs. The sow is said to be crazy about truffles because the truffle has the same musky smell as the sexual odour of the wild boar. Unlike mushrooms, truffle spores are not spread by the wind so they need animals to disperse them. Pigs need no encouragement to look for truffles. In fact, it requires constant vigilance and firmness on the part of the truffle hunter to prevent them from swallowing the lot. Nowadays, dogs are replacing pigs; they have no natural interest in truffles and can be trained to indicate with a paw the place where they have smelt them. They are also smaller, more manageable, don't tire as easily, and they don't go into a sexual frenzy when approaching a truffle.

Exciting new villas in Oualidia & Essaouira with Quality Villas

I have just returned from another trip to Morocco and this time I visited Oualidia and Essaouira which are on the coast between Casablanca and Agadir.

Freshly caught fish and seafood is a speciality here as well as many restaurants cooking excellent Moroccan tajines and couscous. The long sandy beach is perfect for families with miles of sand for children to play. Christmas is coming.....

As Christmas starts to approach (even though it is November!) we forget all about our French family holidays in France we had this year and focus on the festivities. Whereas UK has one long holiday that stretches from Christmas Eve to New Year in France it is quite different!! When I first moved here 17 years ago there was nothing – no Christmas trees, no decorations, no Christmas lights in the towns or villages and no turkeys! Now, it is quite different with all these things but France still retains its own traditions.

Most French homes decorate their homes at Christmas time with a Nativity scene or crèche with little clay figures called 'santons' or 'little saints' that are still made from moulds that have passed down since the 17th century. Christmas markets have now begun and this year marks the second of these in my area of South West France. Generally, the Christmas markets, with their little wooden huts selling gifts were traditionally in the North of France around the Alsace region. Some of our family farmhouses in South West France are available at Christmas & New Year with a roaring log fire and warm home comforts.

Food in France at Christmas time is quite different from UK. However, there is a traditional Yule log-shaped cake called the Buche de Noel, meaning 'Christmas Log.' The main Christmas feast is quite grand and is known as 'Le Reveillon', served as a very late supper held after midnight mass on Christmas Eve. Different regions have different traditional menus and in the South West it is oysters, turkey and foie gras. French families also bake a Three Kings Cake with a bean hidden in it on the Twelfth Day after Christmas. The lucky person to find the bean in their slice is crowned the King or Queen, for the day.

Ships of the desert...

The allure of Morocco goes hand in hand with the images and culture of caravans of camels and their owners trekking across the desert. Even though the camels of Morocco are not used as a method of transport, they have become vital in the tourism industry and to the income of many locals. In Aglou Plage where our luxury beachside villas in Agadir are based, camel trekking along the shore is a pastime most visitors enjoy.

Traditionally camels have two humps on their backs but the camels used in Morocco only have one. Camels in Morocco are therefore known as Dromedaries, are rarely found in the wild and most of those seen walking around the landscape have owners. Often herds that have not been domesticated to a certain degree can be seen, but they will still follow their nomadic owners from one feeding ground to another.

These very gentle creatures are highly intelligent and extremely patient. They have long thick eyelashes and very hairy ears that protect their eyes and ears from the sand. Full-grown camels can stand at a height of between six or seven feet and their lifespan ranges between twenty-five to fifty years of age. Owners and locals respect the Dromedaries for their natures and their ability to survive in the desert with very little food and water. Their amazing ability to survive the desert heat is by being able to increase their own body heat.

So, while the women at Aglou Plage are learning the skills of making a Moroccan tajine, the men are trekking on their camels dreaming of being the next Omar Sharif !

A fishy tale....

I have just returned from a week’s holiday near Agadir – Aglou Plage to be precise where we have beachfront villas in Aglou as part of my Morocco portfolio for Quality Villas.

As the villa I stayed in was right on the beach then what better idea than to have freshly caught fish for supper. All along this coastline from Agadir to Mirleft are fishing boats and many single fishermen casting their fishing rods from the shoreline. The Atlantic Ocean offers some great sports fishing. Tunas and marlins are among the main game fishes here, and both deep-sea and coastal fishing are available. Fishing is Agadir is good throughout the year, and there are several charter boats available for fishing trips.

The first morning I was there the local fisherman knocked at my door selling fish. I settled on a large sole and it did not disappoint even though I probably paid well over the odds for it! It was delicious and this whetted my appetite for more.

In the village of Aglou Plage where our luxury villas in Aglou are located is the local fish market which is government controlled. You visit in the morning depending on the weather to witness the catch being brought in. Then the bargaining starts for a good price for anything from shark, tuna, sole or marlin, to name but a few. The fish is so fresh and perfect to BBQ or coat in seasoned flour and pan fry until golden.

A trip to the fish counter in Tiznit market is indeed interesting where a good variety of fish is sold. Here you can get your choice of fish gutted, descaled and cleaned and even told a tale about the fishing industry along this coastline. For me, squid is my favourite jewel of the sea and I have had love affair with this wriggling, ugly specimen for years! I love it whether it’s grilled, fried or stuffed. I had the best squid of my life in a small restaurant in Sidi Ifni which is about 45kms from Aglou Plage where our luxury villas on the beach are. It was so fresh, so yummy that I could have eaten platefuls!

In late Autumn I will be off again to Morocco again and this time I will be travelling to Oualidia and Essaouira which are on the coastline between Casablanca and Agadir. Ideal destinations for your luxury beach villa in Morocco.

The long sandy beach is perfect for families with miles of sand for children to play. I will be visiting a lovely Riad which has its own plunge pool, a rarity in Essaouira.

Le Vendange !!

September has long been one of my favourite months so it is no surprise that I think September is one of the best times to visit France. Not only will you get to enjoy plenty of sunshine and warm weather, but the tourist season is beginning to wind down which means cheaper travel, fewer crowds but most of all our French family farmhouses or French villas are that much cheaper to rent!!
September also marks the beginning of grape harvest season in France and in the medieval and picturesque town of Saint Emilion the wines of Saint Emilion have been well recognized and respected for centuries. A celebration honouring the harvest of these very special grapes takes place in the middle of the month with open air festivities. One of our popular South West France villas is Maison Pastorale which is less than hours drive from St Emillion.

September is a great time to check out the many vineyards around the country and go wine tasting or join in the local Vendange. The Vendange is great fun even though a bit strenuous the superb open air lunch and lively chatter dispels all that plus it’s fascinating to see how the grapes get to your bottle of wine. If this is too much like hard work then visit one of hundreds of vineyards across South West France. Wine tasting or degustation with a guided tour is a must and at the end of the day you can take home your wine and savour it at your French family villa.

The family holiday rush to France has begun!!

Last weekend saw the biggest exodus from UK to France – the start of the UK summer holidays!! As parents pack the suitcases and children are getting their swim suits out of storage we at Quality Villas are getting ready for a busy six weeks. Our luxury villas in France all have private pools so you can be assured not only of a super house but a sparkling blue pool all to yourself!!

Before you leave its always worthwhile having a couple of essentials packed with your holiday documents and those are guide books and a simple translation booklet. Whilst we know that all you want to do is lay by the pool in your family villa in France there are some amazing sights to be seen in France and are worth a look so take your guide book and language book and explore!!

Guide Book
Do your self a favour and purchase at least two and pay attention to buy the most current editions. Rough Guides or Lonely Planet Guides are well known for their independent view and they are a great choice. These are in-depth guides printed in small letters on a thin paper to pack as much information as possible and still keep the volume small enough to fit into your luggage. If you prefer plenty of colourful photographs on a quality paper, then you will do better with the National Geographic Guides. Do study your guides before you leave, so that you can better plan your trip. You will know exactly where to go (or where/when not to go), and what can be seen near your rural villa in France.

Language
You may have heard of the French being proud of their language and although they learn English at school, they hesitate to use it. However, you would be surprised by the change in their attitude if you just try a few words or simple phrases. You are a guest in their country so it makes more sense to make the first step. You’ll be amazed to see how far a little French will go. It will literally open doors to their culture. If they see that you try with some help of mimics and hand signs you will get your message across, that’s for sure. Try simple words and then go onto small phrases. A good idea is to learn restaurant menus and foods – most important if you think you are ordering beef and you get horse instead!!

Sunflowers & Summer Night Markets in South West France

Right now in SW France the sunflowers are beginning to come out and the fields are ablaze with yellow. This year must "Sunflower Year" as almost every field is sunflowers – it’s an amazing sight! Some of them are still quite small and others are the size of dinner plates! If you are on holiday at one of our French farmhouses in south west France then you will enjoy the beauty of these flowers.

They are planted as seeds and when fully grown all face the same way – south east to the sun; hence Tournesol (turn to the sun). In this hilly yet fertile region the sunflowers are a part of South West France as is the Eiffel Tower to Paris.

Now turn your minds to the fabulous night markets that have just started a couple of weeks ago in the South West and the area where I live. So, if you are staying at any of our luxury villas in south west France then make sure you visit one of the many in the region. The one that I go is at St Maurin the Lot et Garonne which is on a Wednesday. The centre of the village is taken over by stalls selling bread, pancakes, salads, pizza, barbequed meats and of course the local wine!! Long lines of trestle tables are laid out in the centre with the stalls dotted around the outside. There is always a band which gets things going and it really is like a street party. I live in Bourg de Visa, in the Tarn et Garonne, which has started the night market trend on Friday evenings and its as good as St Maurin, if not a little smaller. We have family villas around both of these area and some still have August availability.

Fireworks and fun for "Le Quatorze Juilliet"

Just like America has Independence Day on 4th July, France has the fourteenth. On July 14th every year, the French celebrate their independence day called Bastille Day. This day is an important national holiday to them because it marks the day when the French celebrate the start of the Revolution and the birth of their nation. For those on holiday at one our luxury French villa or French farmhouses the celebrations are the same.

For the citizens of France, July 14, 1789, has come to symbolize liberty, democracy, and the struggle against all forms of oppression. It marked the end of the monarchy and the beginning of the Republic. The storming of the Bastille proved that power was no longer in the hands of the King, but instead in the hands of the people. The storming of the Bastille also marked the beginning of the French Revolution.

“Le quatorze juillet” is a great day of national celebrations throughout France. It is a national holiday where joyous cries of “Viva la France” can be heard at the fabulous firework displays littered right across the country with some even singing the national anthem “La Marseillaise”.

Where I live in the Tarn et Garonne we always have a riverside picnic with champagne waiting for the fireworks to start in one of the many villages that celebrates this important day in French history.

The hills are alive with muscles and lycra….

They say there is a fine line between sanity and madness and the Tour de France is no exception and literally the biggest bike race in the world.

This years Tour de France is the 97th and starts on Saturday 3rd July at Rotterdam, the first time it has started outside of France. It is made up of 21 stages and will cover a total distance of 3,596 kilometres and finish on Saturday 25th July in Paris.

Many of the families who book a Quality Villas holiday ask about hiring bikes with some even bringing their own either to amble along country lanes or to tackle steep hills and mountainous terrain. All of them may want to be a “Bernard Hinault” who has won most of the races and nicknamed the Badger but what better than enjoy this sport decked out in bright lycra to match the army of cyclists that I encounter each weekend in the region where I live. Cycling is big in my region due to the terrain and open countryside and after an energetic cycle what better that to have a swim at your French country villa and a long cool beer.

The race can be watched anywhere along the route: near the start of the day's leg, riders tend to be very bunched and the actual race passes in about a minute. Towards the end of a leg, riders are more spaced out, so the thrill of the race lasts longer. However most of the spectacle comes not from the riders themselves, but from the "caravan", an hour-long procession of cars, floats and motorcycles from the Tour's sponsors and the teams. It's all very commercial, with freebies being thrown out to the spectators; cheap baseball caps, little packs of sweets, mini-pretzels, key rings and other gimmicks. It's interesting to watch, and the kids love it.

Summer Night Market in St Maurin and a new property for Quality Villas….

Activity is going on already in the village of St Maurin which is situated between Agen and Bourg de Visa in the shape of the night market preparations. This village has a 12th century abbey set amongst half timbered houses and every Wednesday evening throughout July & August is the superb night market held in the square. Food is eaten on long trestle tables after being bought from one of the many food stalls. Drinking, eating and dancing go on until midnight and its great fun. Many people who visit the market are holidaymakers who love this part of south west France.

Having a good clearout....

Its that time of year again – the vide grenier season which literally means “empty your attic”. Yesterday, in the village where I live had their vide grenier and I had a stall alongside my sisters. You pay so many Euros per metre of pavement to sell your wares. You have to start early as the professional bargain hunters are out and want to bag the bargains.

We were set up by 8am and ready for the onslaught. A bacon buttie later and I was selling already. I couldn’t believe the stuff I had and before long my sister and I were in stiff competition as to who sold the most and who made the most money!

Looking at the other stalls we had some good stuff to sell and we sold it cheaply, unlike our French friends who sell at much higher prices. By the end of the day we have made over 200€ each and cleared our tables!

Vide greniers are a way of life in France and the whole day is done with good humour and even stopping between 12 – 2pm for your typical French lunch of cheese, bread, pate and bread, not forgetting the old vino!

Vide greniers and brocantes (a posher version) will be in all villages now until the end of August. So, if you are coming to stay at any of out French family farmhouses or French family villa then leave some space in the car or suitcase for that special “find”. It could be Limoges plates, a gemstone or a little bit of “tat” but its all good fun and the atmosphere is great.

I’m ready for my close up now Mr Demille….

As Norma Desmond said to the famous film producer Cecil B Demille there is one place to visit when you are in your luxury villa in Marrakech and that is the famous Atlas Film Studio. Situated in Quarzazate it’s 2 hour drive to this amazing studio, but worth it. This studio is one of the best Morocco tourist attractions set in a fantastic desert like landscape and is a must see for all visitors to Morocco.

Morocco is also known as the Hollywood of Morocco. The film sets in the Atlas Film Studio have been a favourite with the directors of period movies. There are a numerous international blockbusters that have been shot in Atlas Film Studio in Morocco. These include The Jewel of the Nile, Cleopatra, Lawrence of Arabia and the Sheltering Sky. In addition to these a few scenes from the recent blockbusters Star Wars and Gladiator have also been shot there.

There are guided tours around the studio and visitors take an elaborate round of the film sets where all the film stars had once performed. If luck prevails the visitors might even chance meeting one of their favourite stars in the studio in full action !!

Did you see Jamie in the Midi Pyrénées…..

For those following Jamie’s culinary adventures last week he was in my area, the Midi Pyrénées and it was a joy to watch knowing all the places that he visited – I knew too!!

If there is something clear in the world, it is the gastronomy language is defiantly French!! Its kitchen is the national pride of the French people and the fame of the French is good eating and drinking. As you read on think about your family rental villa for your summer holiday.

In the area that I live duck, goose, and foie gras are elements of the kitchen of the region of Dordogne and Midi-Pyrénées. These dishes are mainly accompanied by plums, raisins or truffles. The markets groan each week with fresh local produce, cured hams, duck, farm bred chickens and wonderful cheeses.

Did you know that there are more than 400 varieties of cheeses. The most famous are Brie, Roquefort, Camembert and those of goat. My favourites are the ripe, runny Camembert’s and St. Felician and the stronger the better! I like my cheese to take the roof of my mouth off and leave the milder cheeses to the less adventurous. Sete – The Venice of the Languedoc with Quality Villas

We are now on our second week here in Spain and it has been very interesting weather wise. From warm sunny days, to snow on the mountains and the past couple of days to rain!! However, we are fortunate as France has had more snow and the UK even more!!

Spanish Haciendas versus French Country Domaines!!!

I am on holiday in Spain and it has been an interesting drive from France to the Spanish border and beyond. The long drive saw many interesting buildings, countryside and landscape. Spain is pretty diverse and that’s what makes it interesting and if you venture inland to what I call the old and interesting “Real Spain” you can marvel at the amazing haciendas that are here. A hacienda is a large estate, often covering a huge amount of land. The term is also used to refer to the house of the owner, which is often built on a large scale designed to impress and awe visitors. The foundation of most haciendas was livestock and agriculture. A hacienda could generate immense amounts of wealth for the owner, especially if there was a mine on the premises.

A land where time has almost forgot !!

A little night music amongst the greenery!!

It is said that the history of France is written in her gardens and this is reflected in the many different styles to be found, from grand palace estates to delightful private gardens such as Monet’s at Giverny in central France. In one of the regions that I manage are the amazing Gardens of Eyrignac which are located 13 km north east of Sarlat in the Dordogne at Salignac.

This garden is filled with greenery and displays every shade of green: yews, box trees, hornbeams and cypress trees are the main species in the garden.
It is the sheer volume of topiaries which creates the essence of Eyrignac from plant sculptures, rooms of greenery, box embroideries and borders in the French style. All of these displays are in perfect harmony with the architectural lines of the Manoir and visitors, young and old marvel at this jewel in the Dordogne.

Every Monday evening from mid July to end of August from 7 pm to nightfall is a musical white picnic in the White Garden. The White Garden is filled with white roses enjoy the cooling fountains at twilight. From sunset to nightfall, visitors eat their picnic treats or enjoy a delicious slice of foie gras and a glass of wine in the restaurant. Adults tariff is just 9€.50 and free for children under 14 years old.

This civilised evening is popular and enjoyed by many and what perfect way to spend a summers evening not far from your Dordogne villa or Dordogne farmhouse.

Winter weather makes you dream of your sunny summer holiday!!!

Last weekend saw South West France and other regions covered in a blanket of snow. Whereas the UK had its fair share of snow in the past month, in my part of the world it is relatively unheard of. Waking up to 20cm of snow, freezing temperatures during the day and minus 10°C at night was enough to make me think of last summer when it was so hot here I was dreaming of cold weather!!

Last years weather was glorious – the sun shone literally every day for nearly four months. Our French villas and French farmhouses were booked up very quickly last year and its looks like the same is happening again.

One of my favourite properties is Maison Pastorale – a beautiful house set in a rural location not far from Marmande and Bordeaux. With its large rooms, delightful bedrooms and private pool this house is always popular.

There is much to see and do in this area from vineyards to cycling and historic Bordeaux which is a must to visit. Venture further north to the Dordogne (easily accessible by car) and take the children kayaking on the River Dordogne or visit one of the many pretty villages.

Riding the French Railways

In all the years I have lived in South West France, which total 16 in all, I am ashamed to say that I have only been on the train once!!

I have to say they are the most efficient and comfortable that I have ever experienced. Train travel in France is relatively cheap and if tickets are booked well in advance then they are extremely reasonable in cost.

Whilst most people drive to their French Villa destination or fly, the train is becoming more and more popular and so easy! Even though you see a fair amount of countryside when you drive, it is only from the Autoroute and that can be limiting.

I took the train from Toulouse last week end to go to Antibes on the Cote d’ Azur. I was apprehensive at first but found the whole experience so well organised. Ticketing is so simple and you can choose your seat whether to sit on your own, as a couple of a family of four. Once on the platform you can view where your carriage is so no panicky about where to get on. I chose first class which is only a quarter more in price than second class and glad that I did. It was very comfortable, quiet and the hours literally flew by.

My journey took me through all the areas that I cover in the South West managing a wide selection of Languedoc villas from Castelnaudary to Carcassonne and onto Sete where the train travels along the coast. From there onto Marseille and onto the areas that my colleagues in the South cover – from Toulon to Cannes to Nice. This was a perfect opportunity for me to see the areas that they work in and the different architecture and terrain.

I thoroughly enjoyed my train journey going through all the areas where we have rural Farmhouses in South West France or Luxury Villas in Provence and Cote d’Azur.
Therefore, when you are thinking of booking your summer holiday spare a thought for your journey by train – a different experience entirely.

The Christmas Festivities Approach !!!!

As Christmas approaches we forget all about our summer villa holiday and focus on the festivities. Whereas UK has one long holiday that stretches from Christmas Eve to New Year, in France it is quite different!! When I first moved here 16 years ago there was nothing – no Christmas trees, no decorations, no Christmas lights in the towns or villages and no turkeys! Now, it is quite different with all these things but France still retains its own traditions.

Most French homes decorate their homes at Christmas time with a Nativity scene or crèche with little clay figures called 'santons' or 'little saints' that are still made from moulds that have passed down since the 17th century. Christmas markets have now begun and this year marks the first of these in my area of South West France. Generally, the Christmas markets, with their little wooden huts selling gifts were traditionally in the North of France around the Alsace region. Night markets have started this year too in my region and if they are good as the summer night markets then another tradition has been born.

Food in France at Christmas time is quite different from UK. However, there is a traditional Yule log-shaped cake called the Buche de Noel, meaning 'Christmas Log.' The main Christmas feast is quite grand and is known as 'Le Reveillon', served as a very late supper held after midnight mass on Christmas Eve. Different regions have different traditional menus and in the South West it is oysters, turkey and foie gras. French families also bake a Three Kings Cake with a bean hidden in it on the Twelfth Day after Christmas. The lucky person to find the bean in their slice is crowned the King or Queen, for the day.

Black Diamonds in South West France !!!

In South West France there are many markets which vary from Night markets in the summer to Farmers Markets or just plain Bric & Brac markets so it’s a perfect area for your South West villa holiday whether in summer or off season.

The most famous truffle market starting on the first Tuesday of December until mid-March is in Lalbenque which is close to Cahors in South West France. It takes place in the main street, called " La rue du Marché aux Truffes” and is well worth a visit. The market opens on the dot of two o’clock and generally lasts just a few minutes with everyone hiding their “black diamond” treasure under red checked napkins, in paper bags or small wicker baskets. If you are to make a day of it then arrive before midday and have a truffle omelette in one of the restaurants that line the main street. We even have rural farmhouses to rent within easy reach of this village and many others.

Truffles are strange looking fungi found just below the ground in open woodland, usually under oak or hazel trees, and their pungent aroma attracts many animals, particularly female pigs. The sow is said to be crazy about truffles because the truffle has the same musky smell as the sexual odour of the wild boar. Unlike mushrooms, truffle spores are not spread by the wind so they need animals to disperse them. Pigs need no encouragement to look for truffles. In fact, it requires constant vigilance and firmness on the part of the truffle hunter to prevent them from swallowing the lot. Nowadays, dogs are replacing pigs; they have no natural interest in truffles and can be trained to indicate with a paw the place where they have smelt them. They are also smaller, more manageable, don't tire as easily, and they don't go into a sexual frenzy when approaching a truffle.

Gastronomy & Wine – perfectly coupled with your French Villa Holiday!!

I have just come back from a week in UK whereby I had to have my obligatory fish and chips, curry and take away Chinese. I really enjoy these foods when I visit “the old country” and often visit the country pubs which I really miss. However, after a week I am hankering to be home and to return to my French food diet which is regional food and wine!!

If there is something clear in the world, it is the gastronomy language is defiantly French!! Its kitchen is the national pride of the French people and the fame of the French is good eating and drinking. As you read on think about your french family villa rental for your 2010 holiday.

From the Northwest coast as well as Mediterranean, there is quality fish, as well as seafood in the form of oysters, mussels and clams, especially in the zone of Aquitaine and the Charente.

In the area that I live duck, goose, and foie gras are elements of the kitchen of the region of Dordogne and Midi-Pyrénées. Mainly accompanied by plums, raisins or truffles.

While in the Languedoc the typical Mediterranean kitchen is based on olives, garlic, fish soups mussels, fresh fish and salads.

Not forgetting the wonderful cheeses where there are more than 400 varieties. The most famous are Brie, Roquefort, Camembert and those of goat. My favourite are the ripe, runny Camembert’s and St. Felician and the stronger the better! I like my cheese to take the roof of my mouth off and leave the milder cheeses to the less adventurous.

What about the wine you say!! The glasses are always full in France, in spite of the recognized spiritual drinks like Armagnac, cointreau, the cider or the calvados, the king is the wine!! The French are authentic lovers of good wines and its country is seeded from corner to corner of vineyards. The great producing regions are Bordeaux and Champagne, although good wines can be found in the valley of the Loire and of the Rhone.

Water Sports & Water Jousting in the Languedoc

The Mediterranean coast has wide sandy beaches and rocky creeks along the Côte Vermeille. There are also clear lagoons, lakes, canals, rivers, swimming pools fed by natural hot springs, and even subterranean streams. Equipment can be hired for water skiing, sailing, windsurfing, fun boarding, scuba diving, sand yachting, kite flying, sea kayaking, jet skiing, canoeing, river kayaking and white water rafting. For those water sport lovers it’s a perfect area to have your French villa holiday.
If watersports is not your “thing” then you must go and see the water jousts that take place in the summer, mainly in August, along the Mediterranean coast of the Languedoc. They are exactly what the name suggests, medieval style jousts, but with the jousters mounted on board boats. They attract large crowds of supporters and spectators and are great fun to watch. Two substantial wooden boats are rowed towards each other by eight or ten oarsmen. They pass each other on the left, much like horses in conventional land jousts.
One jouster on each boat stands on a special raised platform at the stern of the boat about three metres (10 feet) above the surface of the water.
In addition to the jouster and the rowers, the crew consists of a helmsman and two musicians, one playing a kind of drum and the other a kind of oboe. Also on board are other jousters who will take part in the next joust.

We listen to what our clients want !!!

This year saw Quality Villas being asked many times if we have luxury villas in La Rochelle and the islands – namely Ile de Rey and Ile de Oleron in the Poitou-Charentes coast. As we listen to our clients we will be investigating and intend on procuring villas in these areas for 2010. Our intrepid Regional Manager (me!) will be travelling there in the New Year looking for the right villas for our clients. Years of experience has taught us what our clients want. To whet your appetite I have done some homework on these areas and I must say I am itching to travel already!!

With as many hours of sun per year as the Riviera, La Rochelle is a popular travel destination. It is also one of the most attractive and unspoilt seaside towns in France and steeped in culture and history. Once a popular trading port since the 14th century the charming Old Port is very much the focal point of the town, lined with cafés and restaurants and typical red & white striped umbrellas sets the scene and a popular place to relax for tourists as well as residents. The port entrance is guarded by two impressive towers that offer stunning views from the top La Rochelle is becoming increasingly chic and popular, with young people and families heading there during the summer months because of the nearby beaches.

For those who may want to visit something more “swishier” then head for the Porte de Minimes which is a large modern marina development filled with nice shops, restaurants and lively bars. This is where the young and beautiful gather at weekends and summer evenings to sun and show off their tans on small, yet stunning Plage des Minimes which boasts spectacular sunsets too!! With its fantastic seafood cuisine, ancient arcaded streets, empty beaches and sensational Atlantic sunsets it’s a must to have your luxury villa holiday here!

The city is connected to the Ile de Rey by a 2.9 km bridge and is very popular in the summer. The Ile de Rey boasts 70km of coastline, including 25 km of fine sand beaches. Another island that is very popular is Ile d'Oleron, off the Poitou-Charentes coast near the Ile de Rey is the largest island off mainland France except for Corsica, at 34km by 15 km. The island is connected to the mainland by a bridge 3km long. It is a very popular summer holiday destination, above all because of the consistent sunshine and fine beaches on the island. Apart from the beaches, two of the towns on the island are worth exploring - Saint-Pierre (the capital of the island) to the north; and Le Chateau to the south.

The giant holiday rush to France!!

This weekend sees the biggest exodus from UK to France – the start of the UK summer holidays!! As parents pack the suitcases and children are getting their swim suits out of storage we at Quality Villas are getting ready for a busy six weeks. Our luxury villas all have private pools so you can be assured not only of a super house but a sparkling blue pool all to yourself!!

Before you leave its always worthwhile having a couple of essentials packed with your holiday documents and those are guide books and a simple translation booklet. Whilst we know that all you want to do is lay by the pool there are some amazing sights to be seen in France and are worth a look so take your guide book and language book and explore!!

Guide Book

Do yourself a favour and purchase at least two and pay attention to buy the most current editions. Rough Guides or Lonely Planet Guides are well known for their independent view and they are a great choice. These are in-depth guides printed in small letters on a thin paper to pack as much information as possible and still keep the volume small enough to fit into your luggage. If you prefer plenty of colourful photographs on a quality paper, then you will do better with the National Geographic Guides. Do study your guides before you leave, so that you can better plan your trip. You will know exactly where to go (or where/when not to go) and what can be seen there.

Language

You may have heard of the French being proud of their language and although they learn English at school, they hesitate to use it. However, you would be surprised by the change in their attitude if you just try a few words or simple phrases. You are a guest in their country so it makes more sense to make the first step. You’ll be amazed to see how far a little French will go. It will literally open doors to their culture. If they see that you try with some help of mimics and hand signs you will get your message across, that’s for sure. Try simple words and then go onto small phrases. A good idea is to learn restaurant menus and foods – most important if you think you are ordering beef and you get horse instead!!

Sunflowers & Night Markets in South West France

Sunflowers & Summer Night Markets in South West France

Right now in SW France the sunflowers are beginning to come out and the fields are ablaze with yellow. Some of them are still quite small and others are the size of dinner plates!! Driving around this wonderful part of France where I have lived for 16 years I am never ceased to be amazed by the beauty of these flowers. They are planted as seeds and when fully grown all face the same way – south east to the sun; hence Tournesol (turn to the sun). In this hilly yet fertile region the sunflowers are a part of South West France as is the Eiffel Tower to Paris.
Now turn your minds to the fabulous night markets that have just started in the South West and the area where I live. Most of these markets are held on Saturdays but a few are held mid week so the holidaymakers on a weeks holiday do not miss out on all the fun.
The one that I go to nearly every Wednesday is at St Maurin the Lot et Garonne. The centre of the village is taken over by stalls selling bread, pancakes, salads, pizza, barbequed meats and of course the local wine!! Long lines of trestle tables are laid out in the centre with the stalls dotted around the outside. There is always a band which gets things going and it really is like a street party. The popularity of St Maurin night market and others has grown over the past couple of years and anyone who visits my area will be sure of a warm welcome!!

MOROCCO!! Exciting, Mystical, Diverse & Fabulous!!!

This fascinating country where the old customs and way of life still exist in rural areas to the newly built up and westernised areas of Marrakech and Agadir offers so much to any traveller who is looking for sun, fascinating cities and long sandy beaches. The noise of the Medina in Marrakech is legendary with storytellers, snake charmers, musician’s and thronging with people. It is so diverse - one minute a smart Mercedes, the next minute a laden donkey groaning under local produce perched precariously on its back. This imperial city lies at the foot of the Atlas Mountains is a must to see at any time of the year but I found the best time to visit was between October and May with temperatures ranging between 25°F – 28°F on average. Summers are hot with temperatures rising to 50°F in August.

Before you rush to book one of our Moroccan Villas then allow me to tell you about these amazing places that I return to time and time again and who can beat flying to Africa in just 3 hours by the low budget airlines that offer affordable airfares!!

I have visited Marrakech many times now and each time I visit I love it even more. Yes, tourism has arrived in Marrakech but traditions are still the same. Bartering in the Souks (my favourite pastime!) is fun and great bargains are to be had from leather goods to Berber materials and ceramics.

On one of my many trips to Marrakech I visited Essaouira which is a 3 hour drive from Marrakech and easily reached by coach, car or taxi. Essaouira's biggest attraction is its relaxing atmosphere. It's not a big town, and being on the coast it has a holiday feel about it. As soon as you enter Essaouira you notice that everything is pained blue and white, the colours of Essaouira, from taxis to houses. It’s a working port whereby many varieties of fish are caught daily. Walk along the ramparts early in the morning to watch the fishing boats come in. Some of best seafood I have ever tasted has been in Essaouira. The Medina & Souks are much easier to get round than Marrakech as it’s that much smaller and not so commercial as Marrakech.
One of the main attractions of Essaouira is the beach which is 10kms long and sandy. Because Essaouira is on the Atlantic coast then the sea can be quite cool and it also quite windy but between October and May is still a pleasant 23°F to 25°F. It’s very popular for windsurfing and kite surfing with windsurfing schools dotted along the coastline.

Quality Villas has recently expanded into Agadir, one of Morocco’s most visited Southern city. Agadir is not your typical city of traditional Morocco, but it is a modern, busy and dynamic town with well maintained beaches and palm-lined boulevards. There is a very western feel about the place with its beachfront bars and the mild winter climate (January average midday temperature 20°C/68°F) has made it a major "winter sun" destination for Northern Europeans.
We have two luxury villas close to the beach, both in a residential complex and offer quality accommodation with comfort in mind.

We have Riads in the Medina of Marrakech and villas to rent in the Palmeraie area which is outside of the main city walls about 15 minutes from the Medina.

Our riads can be rented exclusively for the whole Riad but generally they operate more on a bed and breakfast type arrangement. Our riads can be rented for a minimum of one night therefore allowing the client to tailor make their own holiday. All riads are fully staffed and many offer beauty treatments such as massage and hammams. Airport transfers are available at some riads.

Our villas are located outside of the Medina and on the edge of the city. Large domains that have been developed with luxury villas, gardens and some with shared tennis courts. These domains are enclosed and private from the road. All domains have well tended streets and many are patrolled for client safety. All villas are fully staffed with cooks, maids, housekeepers, gardeners, pool men and on request drivers. The villas are generally very large with at least 2 salons, dining room and all have ensuite bedrooms. Decorated in tadelakt style with rich furnishings and fabrics these villas are luxurious escapes from the busy Medina. Kitchens are not available to clients in any villa or riad as they all offer “hotel type services”. Meals are discussed daily with the housekeeper and chef and some of our villas offer breakfast as part of the package. Lunches and dinners can be taken either formally in the dining room or al fresco on the many terraces that these villas have. These meals are paid locally and prices do not include drinks.
The grounds to these villas are extensive with water features, palms, olive trees and flowering shrubs. All villas have large swimming pools and some share the tennis courts situated in the domains.

Villas can be rented for a minimum of 3 nights and can be rented exclusively as well. Beauty treatments such as massage are available; chauffeurs and babysitting can be arranged for a small cost. Airport transfers are available at most villas.

Our Dar Azrou villas are very popular so book early to save disappointment!!
The Dar Azrou complex is situated in a large private domain about 20 minutes from the Medina. This enclosed complex has around 14 individual 4 bed roomed villas all with their own swimming pool. Quality Villas have 9 of these villas available to rent from a minimum of 3 nights on an exclusive rental. Situated within mature grounds the complex offers a fitness centre, beauty salon with various treatments and tennis. All of the villas are next to each other therefore forming a small village that is popular with all ages and particularly families. All villas are decorated and furnished in typical Moroccan style with covered terraces, ensuite bedrooms and a large salon and dining room.

Return airport transfers and a 4 x 4 vehicle with up to 100kms per day are all included in the price.

Meal costs: Breakfast 5€; lunch 12€; dinner 20€ with a 50% reduction for children under 12 years old

Music Festivals – the right note for your holiday in the Gers with Quality Villas !!

For many years Music in South West France has been big business in music terms with Jazz Nights, Brass Bands and Blues Nights. During the summer months many villages and towns hold their own music festivals with dancing, food and all great fun for young and old alike. Notably the most famous of Music Festivals are explained below and are an absolute must to visit if you are holidaying during July & August.

For a few days in July, Mirande, a small village in the Gers transforms itself into an American town. Apart from the Country Music (more later) there are also hot-air balloon flights, American cars, Harley-Davidsons, and endless other attractions and activities for all the family. The Country Music festival is legendry and recognized as the first Country Music festival in Europe and has attracted many American Country & Western starts plus the cast of Dallas who regularly attend. Music starts in the evening at 5 pm until dawn the following day. Mixed with the fun loving people of Mirande, the gorgeous countryside and gastronomic pleasures of South West France this festival should be first on everyones list to visit.

The sleepy town of Marciac a small town in the Gers is transformed by the Festival, with the main square hosting several stages. Almost every building turns into a restaurant or bar, many with their own live jazz. The quality of jazz is outstanding and several concerts each year are simply world class. The music winds down around 3am and the atmosphere is laid back and informal. The Jazz Festival runs for around 10 days and starts at the beginning of August. This enormous event, with the main concert hall getting bigger each year, now seats around 5,000 people.

The small town of Vic Fezenac in the Gers is where the Tempo Latino Music Festival is held at the end of July with the best concerts normally held on Friday and Saturday nights. The town is turned into one great Latin & Afro-Cuban atmosphere where the bars and music run throughout the nights of the festival. As with Latin & Afro-Cuban music you can expect a lively time and perfect for all ages. The biggest concerts are in the Bull Ring and are fantastic! The main street becomes a huge market and the atmosphere is truly non-stop!!!

Other small festivals in the Gers can be found at Condom and Fleurance. Both festivals are held in July with the Festival Africain in Condom. Apart from music there is an African market, Moroccan tea rooms and many other African specialities. Nearby Fleurance holds its annual Cuivo Foliz festival which is all about brass bands. This year there are 12 brass bands performing in over 50 concerts.

Food and wine of South West France

Think of South West France for food and drink and what do you conjure up? Our South West France area manager Gill Woolsgrove gives her thoughts on this...

Well, living here for 15 years taught me the delights of regional food that is available here. As the area is largely agricultural with restaurants and cafes used by many locals then the produce is locally grown and plentiful. Duck is the mainstay of this region served either as breast with a rich sauce or confit. Other delights are sanglier (wild boar), geese, game, Landes chickens, foie gras, lamb roasts and casseroles.

There is also a wide range of fish, cured hams and sausages as well as a wide variety of cheeses such as Cantal, soft goat cheeses (cabécous) as well as a wide choice of all the famous French varieties. Followed of course by good fruit tarts made with the famous Agen prunes and local fruit such as plum and apple.

Nothing would be complete however in this wonderful region where I live is the abundance of local wines. From Buzet (my favourite) to Bordeaux, Cahors Duras, Bergerac and Madrian these are the most popular wines. Visit the local vineyards for wine tasting before you buy a case or even cheaper a cubi container which holds 5 litres. Not forgetting the Armagnac brandies produced between Auch & Condom wines which are made in small quantities and the Armagnac brandies are produced in the area between Auch and Condom.

Mention Mediterranean France and everyone thinks of the Cote d’Azur and Provence. Beautiful areas to visit but why not venture further west and sample the delights of quaint fishing villages, lively cities and at affordable prices.

As part of my portfolio of houses across various regions of France the one area that I have always felt that I am on holiday in, even though I am working, is Sete and the surrounding coastal towns and small villages.

I have visited Sete many times plus the coastal town of Marseillan where I have had the best moules frites ever to the pretty town of Meze north of Sete and famous for wonderful oysters from the Bassin de Thau – again the best oysters I have ever eaten!!

However, Sete is special and my favourite!! Once a small fishing village on the island of Mont St Clair it’s become the definitive Languedoc fishing port for France on the Mediterranean. This warm and colourful town is known as the Venice of Languedoc with its canals and small bridges. The charm of Sète is in the canals, the sea, the streets and the restaurants. You can walk and discover fishing boats, busy with their catch, or find a restaurant to eat and watch the fishing boats go out to sea. Walk down the Saint Louis Pier and look for yachts vie for space. Here you will see some of the fastest sailboats in the world, as it is here that the French train for the America's Cup. For families there are 12 kms of sandy beaches that stretch from Sete to Cap d’Agde. There is so much to do in and around Sete from sailing trips, water sports, micro light flights, tennis, golf, horse riding, museums, theatres and a casino if you fancy a try at the tables!!

Summer in the South West of France - not to be missed!!!

The South West of France conjures up lush countryside, rolling hills, gastronomy and fine wine!! This region abounds with departments that are so different, yet all exciting and memorable. Perfect areas for walking, cycling, rambling and canoeing. The Averyon River and Gorges are spectacular where kayaks can be hired to zig-zag through these amazing waters. Visit Millau, the Averyon’s main town with its new suspension bridge that is an amazing feat of 21st century engineering. Albi the birthplace of Toulouse Lautrec and famous museum that’s houses his famous collection of paintings and posters. Venture further south to the market town of Cahors famous for wine and go wine tasting at the numerous vineyards across the Cahors valley. Moissac with its cathedral and cloisters. Numerous bastide villages perched on the hilltops that date back to medieval times. Montauban with its shops and quaint alleys. The Gers with its lush countryside and forests are a delight and be sure to sample the famous Armagnac of this region. Visit Condom with its quaint streets and shops; Marciac with its Jazz Festival and Mirande for its annual Country & Western festival. To the east is Toulouse, the Rose City, with its fine shops, opera house, theatres and markets. Visit Pau the cathedral city of the Gers and gateway to the Pyrenees. To the west is Bordeaux with historic building and fine shops. Wine lovers must visit the St Emilion vineyards and pretty local villages that surround it. Casteljaloux is famous for its spa baths and visited by people far and wide. Gastronomy in all these areas is superb – foie gras, magret and excellent wine. The South West is a delight and makes France what it is – memorable!!

There are so many fascinating places to explore and discover in the Pay Basques region with long sandy beaches, memorable sunsets, rugged countryside and dramatic scenery.
The fashionable seaside town of Biarritz famed for its Belle Époque architecture, smart shops, chic street-side cafés and not forgetting the famous Casino for those who might like flutter!! Stroll along the long promenade and then take have a cup of hot chocolate in one of many Salon du The and watch the world go by!! The birthplace of French surfing, the Biarritz Surf Festival attracts boarders from a far a field as Australia and Hawaii. This area offers many other water sports too, such as Kite-surfing, Delta-planing and windsurfing.
Visit Bidart a small hill top town located near by the sea and has charm and tranquillity in abundance and where the Pay Basque countryside and coast meet. Most of the beaches are found at the base of a cliff (which, even in the height of the summer are not crowded), with the exception of two, the Plage d'Ilbarritz and Plage de l'Uhabia which are large open beaches.The principle architecture here is Typically Basque with white facades, Basque red shutters & colombage timbers and red pan-tiled roofs. Bidart and Anglet are a golfer’s paradise. There are no less than 12 golf courses along this coastline, the most famous being in Bidart and Anglet. Most of them are on the coastline and overlooking the ocean.
St Jean de Luz is a lovely seaside resort with an active fishing port and close to the Spanish border. A lively and cosmopolitan town which has a distinctive Spanish & Moorish feel about the place!! With a mixture of Basque, Moorish & Andalusia architecture, old world charm, fishing port and narrow lanes there is an atmosphere & ambience especially when the Jazz Fete is on in the streets!!

Castles in the air !!!

Did you know that there are thousands of Chateaux in the Dordogne – literally Castles in the Air!! For those who have never visited the Dordogne then read on and learn about this fantastic region which is visited by thousands every year and you can see why. This region is known as the Perigord and made up of 4 different Perigord covering the north, south, east and west and all offering history, gastronomic delights, chateaux, manoirs, caves and the fabulous Dordogne River. The first place I visited as Regional Manager of this area was Rocamadour, France’s second most visited tourist attraction after Le Mont St-Michel. This magical town with golden houses clinging to the side of a cliff over the Alzou canyon is reached by a lift which takes you to the top of the town. From there you pass shops and restaurants until you reach the little church at the top. Not far from Rocamadour is the Gouffres du Padirac which is the most famous caves whereby you travel through on a boat – great for adults but even better for children looking at the stalagmites and stalactites.
Most tourists visit Sarlat, the medieval town of the Dordogne with its famous Saturday market and a favourite of mine!! In the evening the town has a romantic feel about it with the portrait artists outside the Cathedral St Sacerodos and the numerous restaurants offering the regions famous cuisine – duck!! Without a doubt the Perigord are superb at their duck, from confit du canard to magret (duck breast) to smoked duck salad with local grown walnuts.
Visitors to this region should not think that the Dordogne is mainly for sightseeing and adults but a fab place for children and teenagers. Kayaking on the Dordogne River or cycling on one of the many routes that snake along the river, the list is endless.
I love this region as it is so diverse and whereas it’s busy in the summer months spring and autumn are delightful. When thinking of booking your French holiday villa then think of what the Dordogne and all it has to offer – you will not be disappointed!!

As Regional Manager for Quality Villas covering five departments in total then travelling is second nature to me and after living here for 15 years then I feel that I know all of these areas pretty well.

For those who are not familiar with the South West of France and surrounding regions then get yourself a coffee or something stronger and dream of that holiday you have been promising yourself in this beautiful part of France.

When I first came to France it was the South West that caught my attention. Lush countryside, rolling hills, hot summers and a short winter – hooray!! It offered everything that I had hoped for and I still drive round after all these years in wonder at the beauty of this area. The South West is affordable to visit and rent quality rental accommodation. All towns have excellent markets that not only attracts scores of visitors but used the by locals and all offering excellent local produce, wine and regional offerings such as foie gras and duck.
For those who know the area well the history is quite something with many medieval fortified villages still in existence.

As I ventured further into this area I started to discover the two very distinct and totally different coastlines – that being the Mediterranean and Atlantic. The first I “discovered” was the Atlantic coastline with its rugged coastline, high waves (superb for surfing) and long sandy beaches. The fashionable seaside town of Biarritz beckons to those who like the finer things in life! Smart shops, chic street-side cafés, Casino and Belle Époque architecture would fit the bill yet its still a fab town for the young with Surfing, Kite-surfing, Delta-planing and windsurfing. For those golfing enthusiasts there are no less than 12 golf courses along this coastline. Close to the border of Spain is St Jean de Luz is a lovely seaside resort which has a distinctive Spanish & Moorish feel about the place and an atmosphere & ambience especially when the Jazz Fete is on in the streets in August!! My second adventure was to the Mediterranean coastline and Languedoc region. For those wine buffs amongst us there are no less than 4 main domains in this area offering heady reds to sample and to buy!! Imagine yourself on a boat trip on the famous Canal du Midi having a picnic with local produce such as confit du canard, cheeses and the freshest salad ever tasted and reading Rick Steins “French Odyssey” !!

Italy and her islands

Italy is without a doubt one of the most attractive and fascinating countries in the world: where else is there a landscape like Venice, a city like Florence, history as exists in Rome, countryside like Tuscany and stunning volcanic islands like Sicily or picturesque Elba?

Many others compete of course, Bruges for example calls itself the Venice of the North and even Umbria in Italy tries to get in on the act as the 'new Tuscany!'

If you marry all these wonderful visual beauties with what the Italians do best: food and drink, then you really are going somewhere...add a bit of fashion and style (again think Italian...) and think of the wonderful Italian welcome (where family virtues are still strong in a world that seems more decadent than yesteryear) and it is a wonder that the country is not swamped by visitors and those wishing to live there more and more! Thankfully, the most part of this beautiful country remains unspoilt (testimony to the great preservation these people have levied on their heritage and culture) and easy to visit.

France in the summer

France is a one of the most popular destinations for UK citizens to visit - being only a short hop across the channel by ferry, eurotunnel, eurostar or by plane to one of the many airports spread across the country, it is also easy to get to. Driving holidays are increasingly popular also - the thought for some of loading the family on a flight is occasionally too much to bear, but popping them in the family estate (sometimes with pet on board) is far more palatable.

There are a variety of places to stay in the country, ranging from hotels of various classes, to gites and also self catering villas.

The Cote d'Azur and French Riviera is possibly one of the most exciting places to visit, this includes world famous places such as Cannes, Nice, St Tropez and Montecarlo. For more sophisticated culture, the Loire valley and its elegant chateaux are also very interesting. The area around Normandy is particularly popular for war memorials and enthusiasts of the two great world wars. Rheims is a popular spot for champagne, whilst all the regions have their own wine growing specialities...Bordeaux for instance ranks very highly, as does Sancerre (Loire).

When to visit: the summer is always nice...pick from a number of spots that offer campsites, gites and low end hotels if you are on a bargain run, however if you want something top end but still affordable, why not try a villa France with a specialist company?
